JUDY'S STORY
Judy Napangardi Watson (circa 1935 - 2016) was an indigenous Australian, senior female painter from the Yuendemu community in the Nortern Territory, Australia. Although Judy was a tiny woman she had 10 children and was well known for the distinctive style of painting that she developed alongside her sister Maggie Watson who taught her painting skills, she was a significant contributor to contemporary Indigenous Australian art.
Judy started painting in the 1980s in a 'dragged dotting' style. Her combination of vivid colour, highly detailed works and high-level composition led to widespread appreciation in the art world. Her paintings often describe the Mina Mina country, such as this artwork above.
Just some of the galleries who display Judy's art are:
- Art Gallery of NSW
- National Gallery of Australia
- National Gallery of Victoria
- Aboriginal Art Museum Utretcht
- South Australian Museum
- Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, Charlottesville
Judy was an incredible painter and is sadly missed.
Painting has been professionally stretched and ready to hang and admire.
